More occupant list symbols?
« on: May 15, 2021, 03:21:01 am »

I was playing around with the name and title builder for the list of people in the player's current location, and I thought that there's room for a couple of more symbols to clarify things at a glance.

I've currently got two set up:

1) A heart symbol that displays if the principal is that person's Love object. Rationale: If you're in that close of a relationship, you should be able to recognize them pretty easily.

2) A "Zz" symbol that displays if the person is asleep. Rationale: It's generally not hard to spot whether or not someone is asleep.

I'm just trying to gather opinions on these (and suggestions for any others) before committing it as an update.

Also, before anyone comments, I am aware that there is a Unicode character for the sleep symbol (💤). I haven't figured out how to use it within Visual Basic yet, though; the usual way of inserting Unicode characters is through the CharW function, but it only accepts up to 16-bit numbers (so, no higher than U+FFFF). I'm still looking into it. Scratch that. A little more research finally showed me a way to do it, though I personally don't think it looks that great in-game.

The problem I see with the Love symbol is in my games, I try to seduce most of the populace, starting with the girls in the school. It might come a time when so many are in love with the MC that the symbol becomes meaningless. Plus, because of that play style, my MC probably wouldn't recognize everyone who has fallen in love with him, since that is his goal.

I don't see the need for the sleep symbol. How many places will the MC encounter NPCs asleep? Just their bedrooms and where else? In the bedrooms you only have one or maybe two NPCs, it easy enough to select them and see what the choices are in the interaction menu to tell if they are asleep. Do NPC's fall asleep elsewhere in the game and I never noticed?

Not at present, but I've recently added the ability to set people as being asleep (and, soon, as being awake) through status effect flags, so there could be that ability for the sleeping device (or elsewhere, like drugs and hypnosis) coming soon.

Maybe something showing the level of trust (authority?)?

Could you elaborate on what you mean? Also, if possible, note what symbols you think would be a good fit.

I think he meant something like being on a relationship or corrupted. For example, Perrier mom (sorry don't remember the name, was a long time since last time I've played it) starts that "level of trust" after the event where she discovers what Rie is doing.

About the symbol I have no idea. The trinity can represent trust and union, and differs from ones you showed, like this: https://www.pinterest.pt/pin/426575395933971339/

Personally I recommend seeing the CK2 traits, the symbols can give a lot of ideas. Personally I like the Master Seducer one: https://ck2.paradoxwikis.com/Traits

The 2 rings symbol can also work, although it may create conflict for those who want to explore an harem route. But it's something like this:

https://www.dreamstime.com/two-engagment-rings-vector-line-icon-wedding-symbol-concept-outline-style-image140996677

If you want to save some work, I guess the ring one is probably the easier one to do.

Uh, I think there might be a misunderstanding here. I'm not creating symbols to put in there, I'm using existing Unicode characters. Using image files instead of Unicode would probably require an entire rewrite of that occupant panel and several functions elsewhere, and I have no plans to do all that.

Maybe a symbol for all important NPCs.... PTA, mayor, thief, journalist, etc.

Sure, but by what definition are they "in your pocket"? I suppose we could add another trait ("QuestComplete", maybe), and use that.

PTA members already get PTA shown after their name in the list. Are the minor special characters like the thief and journalist even worth note? You only interact with them either by location events, or in places where they're working (and therefore already sorted to the top of the list), right?

The PTA stuff use a status effect "FavorIndicator" (Minor or Major) when you reach a point in a quest line where they owe you something and need to vote for you in PTA meetings.

True, but IIRC, you can add the minor one from hypnosis, and I think I remember at least one of the chains gives out a minor favor and later replaces it with a major favor. Maybe either separate symbols for each, or else only a symbol for the major indicator?

You could use the pawn symbol ( ♟ ) for the minor effect and the rook symbol ( ♜ ) for the major effect, to indicate that you've upgraded your pawn

In part this goes back to "hard-coding" scenario-specific UI stuff into the base engine, which is something I was trying to move away from. But in the end, the result justifies the means. Staying too "generic" may just hurt the overall experience.

Hmm. Towards that end, how would you feel about me adding a section to the config file associating certain status effects with characters to prepend to the occupant list entry? That way, it can still be operating on a per-scenario basis to allow flexibility.
