Okay, after thinking about it (way too much, Excel was even involved...), I've found ways to make it work, but I've also slowly become convinced that the bookcase effect is too much of a PITA to maintain as it is.

The problem with not stacking effects with the bookcase limit is that it introduces weird behaviors, such as a girl unequipping an item suddenly letting her improve a previously maxed out skill. And the business with negative modifiers applying but not positive ones adds complexity that cannot be dealt with in a clean way.

I'm considering lowering the bookcase bonus (perhaps to something like 60/110/165/215), but allowing effects to stack with it. This would remove a lot of complexity from the current methods, and avoid odd behavior like the one described above.

My only worry is that it might cause balance issues, but off the top of my head I'm not sure what those would be.

Bookcases become semi-useless? Especially since their effect is now very close to the one you get from classes (which is a separate headache if you want a 'clean' solution). Eh, I don't really have a good solution, either.

The way I did it was to make sure there was no overlap between item and trait effect types, although I never went through with it to the end (e.g. perks were still too item-y).

They're not useless, as the skill cap applies to a girl whatever her rank, so even a rank C girl can get high skills from an advanced bookcase. The first bookcase is arguably the least useful, but since it gates the other ones, it should still get built.

I for one tend to max girls (both rank and number) before advancing, but I admit this is the worst case and there are probably not many others like me.

Why did they put an abandoned tag to it Jman? Just because the game wasnt updated? Are they dont see what you guys post when a new patch is updated to the test version or what?

No idea. My guess is either an overzealous mod or someone with an axe to grind. Possibly both.

If anyone here knows, that would be Leortha. He got some sort of 'final' reply from the staff, which then got deleted out of his post. :o

I offered to fight this, but since that post got about two likes and zero comments, I guess everyone's okay with the new status quo. :(

Im not okay with it. If we talk about slow update or none at all for years there are way more game there what arent even updated for more then 3 years by now and there is no completed, abandoned or onhold tag for them.

So.  Here is what I can pull from F95.  The first is the first post that I self-reported.  That received the upper of the two replies.  The replied appears to say that if I provided a post that showed the dev was still active, the tag would be removed.

I made a second post, now deleted (not by me), that included a link to Goldo's recent post about how IRL matters had cut down his available dev time.  But it's a very recent post.  The second reply, attached, shuts the door on removing the tag.

After that I made a post that attached the two replies.  That post was stealth-edited by the mods to remove the replies.

I've known that they had the ability to edit user posts, since they have the ability to update the head posts in threads.  But to have them do a censorious edit like this... At that point I punted out of the effort, because I no longer know what to expect from the mods there, and if they are editing user posts to hide their own comments, I felt I was walking blind in a minefield.

The two replies, I suspect by different mods, are totally in contradiction with each other.

Eh, this looks more like lazy moderation. I think a reasoned argument can sway even the last mod to 'Onhold' instead of 'Abandoned'. Heck, HHS+ itself is in a worse position, and has neither tag.

And if not, that's what the ticket system is for.

I'm willing to give it another go, but I really would like to kill several issues at once, i.e. also get the mods to update the OP. I made a proposal, outlining what ought to be changed. Goldo's 'on hold' sitrep should also go somewhere. If I get some feedback on the proposal, I'll go forward. If not, well, let's leave sleeping Kings to their slumber... :-\

From F95 (triggered by a bad _BK.ini launching from the King's Way trainer mod):

Quote from: Error report
File "game/BKfunctions.rpy", line 3152, in read_init_file
    renpy.say("{color=[c_red]}{b}Error parsing " + file + "{/b}{/color}", "{color=[c_red]}" + str(fix) + "{/color} is not a valid fixation.\nCheck the correct use of brackets and quotes.")
Exception: Cannot start an interaction in the middle of an interaction, without creating a new context.
You'll probably want to put the renpy.say into a try block and just print the message if dialogue can't be triggered, or something like that.
