Public demo - Ashford Academy
« on: March 15, 2013, 11:14:00 pm »

Hiya.

As a big fan of HHS (and many of the versions) it's a bit sad to see new versions that get just a few demo versions before it dies.
In my opinion, the worst part is that its almost impossible to continue on what have been released, since the source code usually ain't shared.

My take on this "problem" created this list:
> Shared source code with helpful comments
> Easy to understand
> Easy to add/modify content

It's done in python with renpy and can be executed standalone on Windows, Mac, Linux and Android.

I recommend a screen size of 1280*720 but the window is resizeable.
Using standard renpy I ported it to Android without problems.
And of course, all art is mad by me. (I promise I haven't scavenged the internet for hentai...)
If anyone wants me to ad specific content before source is released, feel free to post or mail me about it. Images should be of quality and at least a JPEG in the size of 1280x720. NPC's are in PNG with transparency.
Depending on time and content, I might decline personally adding the content.
I will not add obvious loli, scat or guro content. (But feel free to add it yourself.)

Source code is available in each and every download but remember:
The source code is not polished yet.
The source code is included to study it, to help resolving bugs and in case I loose interest somebody else can pick up this project.
Use at own risk.

This should be considered the first public beta, although I make no promises related to development other then that the source code will be shared.
Link for windows download (0.4015):http://adf.ly/NPnk6

The above link makes you wait for five seconds before download and if enough download via that one, I might be able to upgrade my internet or buy a bottle of motivation. If you by any reason don't want to support me the direct link can be found beneath.
http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?5mdwp5hiy3aa4sv

Feel free to do whatever with the game/content altho I would prefer to be able to keep stats on downloads and therefore I would inquire that you redirect fellow fappers to my download links.

Any feedback is appreciated.

We have a bug tracker!
It can be found at: http://www.henthighschool.com/ashford-academy/bugs
Feel free to post any bug there, It makes it much easier for me to keep track on them.

If you want to contact me by mail, feel free to do so at Ashford.Academy.Game[at]gmail.com

Oh wow. Well I once said that my favorite version of this game was the remake by hedonismbot but if you keep that up, you're gonna blow it away in no time. I'm not a programmer so I dont know about source code and stuff but I definitly like how more story driven this is and this engine you,re using certainly make playing the game a lot more intuitive. Love all the policy you got right now.

I mean, the only feedback I have are things that I know are probably planned like more buyables and images. Pretty much the only thing I can tell you is that you should probably also make a thread on Hongfire.com hentai forums for this game, theres just a LOT more traffic on that site so I'm sure theres probably a few programmers there who will be able to give you more feedback then me. Otherwise, really looking forward to the next release.

Edit: Oh yeah actually there is one thing, since the days go by so fast, you dont need to make an interlude for the night and tell us «you're going to sleep» everytime. Only do nightime if something actually happen that night, otherwise it kinda break the flow of the game I think.

Best Renpy game I have ever seen, hands down. Ashford, I love this game, can't wait for more. Its a horrible thing to say to a programmer, but I hope you never stop working on this game, and it just grows and grows.

Ran into a bug. Here is the traceback report.

I'm sorry, but an uncaught exception occurred.

While running game code:
File "game\main.rpy", line 250, in script call
File "game\event_dispatcher.rpy", line 297, in script call
File "game\screens\sports_field.rpy", line 268, in script
Exception: Sayer 'boy' is not defined.

  File "C:\Users\****\Desktop\Ashford Academy-0.4-win\Ashford Academy-0.4-win\renpy\ast.py", line 379, in execute
Exception: Sayer 'boy' is not defined.

Windows-7-6.1.7601-SP1
Ren'Py 6.14.1.366

I was able to get past by just hitting ignore each time it popped up, but it was throwing the error every time the boys said something.

Hit another bug.

I was going to report a bug, but Volrath already noted it (missing bath9-1.jpg). I will note that I copy/pasted bath9 and renamed it to 9-1, which resulted in the game complaining about a lack of bath9-2 when I hit reload. Repeating the action to have a 9-2 resulted in a screen followed by a complaint about lack of 9-3 when I did reload. Repeating it to get a 9-3 allowed me to finish the event and continue the game.

Thanks guys!

I'm really happy you like it so far  :)

I fixed the bugs you found and uploaded a new version: (First post link updated as well.)
Please see first post for download.

Thanks, i'll take a look at Hongfire.com when I've done some more work.

I actually like the night time :P But yeah, a friend of mine says the same as you, I'll look into it.

When the second year starts it runs into a crash.
Day was 31th December and should have switched to 1st January.

Code: [Select]
I'm sorry, but an uncaught exception occurred.

While running game code:
File "game\main.rpy", line 125, in script
File "game\main.rpy", line 126, in python
File "game\date.rpy", line 19, in python
IndexError: list index out of range

-- Full Traceback ------------------------------------------------------------

Full traceback:
  File "***\Ashford Academy-0.4002-win\renpy\execution.py", line 266, in run
  File "***\Ashford Academy-0.4002-win\renpy\ast.py", line 646, in execute
  File "***\Ashford Academy-0.4002-win\renpy\python.py", line 1172, in py_exec_bytecode
  File "game\main.rpy", line 126, in <module>
  File "game\date.rpy", line 19, in new_day
IndexError: list index out of range

Windows-7-6.1.7601-SP1
Ren'Py 6.14.1.366
Ashford Academy 0.4

I wish you would have added the source even despite not being that polished yet. Since you didn't: FIX ASAP!
Fixed it myself.

How to install fix:
1. Copy date.rpy into Ashford Academy-0.4002-win\game\ directory
2. Delete date.rpyc

Use fix at own risk. I only suggest to use it with 0.4002 because later versions may work different.
Fix is based on a decompiled version of date.rpyc from Ashford Academy-0.4002 . The real source code by Ashford may look different.

(click to show/hide)
Otherwise: Really nice work. A really beatiful collection of images.

Update: I removed the fix that was attached to this post because the newer version has this bug fixed.

One big issue it saves the game progress fine but when loading a game it goes back to the planning planning planning screen once loaded and wont let me continue as the planning buttons don't work. All other menu and selection options are fine.

Your money increases once a month on the first or last day.  It is based on how many students with a multiplier based on reputation.

Give me some time to sleep and I'lll prob get a "better" version up in 24h with source code ^.^

Well, just add a disclaimer - like in a readme file - saying like

Quote
The source code is not polished yet.
The source code is included to study it, to help resolving bugs and in case I loose interest somebody else can pick up this project.
New features will be added when the code is polished.
Use at own risk.

If anybody complains about the code style or wants to add something too early: point them to the disclaimer and if they still bug you: ignore them - that is their risk for fiddling with the code.

I know doublepost but stll..

Saves have this condition when saving while on the screen to choose the locations. To workaround this save at other times - e.g. while seeing an event.
You may retrieve your progress by loading an autosaved game. Those tend to save at better times.

I literally just cracked the game a few minutes ago, but something's really bothering me- where is that wide shot of the school from? Is it original? For some reason it makes me think of Divi-dead but I don't think that's quite it.
