AAR Suggestions / Questions
« on: January 28, 2019, 06:29:42 pm »

If you have ideas or suggestions for things you would to see in Ashford Academy Redux, or if you have a question about how something is supposed to work, then please post it here.
Bug reports for the currently released version go into the release thread instead!

If you really want, you can of course open up a new topic. But in many cases that is not necessary, and just posting here is simpler and keeps things tidier.  ;)

Is there a plan to increase the amount of money the school earns?  I have found it very hard to build up money in order to purchase the different areas of the school or upgrade them.

As pfko451 mentioned, in the early phases the amount of money you get is quite low and i too had to resort to basically holding Ctrl down and just fast forwarding time to get me started properly.
Though later on, the amount of money seems to accelerate so much that i can easily buy a new facility once a month while slowly lowering class sizes and increasing teacher salary.

Another point i noticed in late-game. At some point, roughly around the time you've unlocked everything except the "minimum inhibition 0", You're morale and behavior starts plummeting at such speeds that you cant effectively stop it.
Even after trying to lessen punishment's, giving students free reign on clothing and perma running behavior weeklies. It still keeps plummeting despite trying to change all policy's to be as mild as possible while also trying to reprimand students on... basically fucking around at that point.
Nothing seems to help and it keeps dropping every time the week changes by roughly 5%.

I also noticed, at some point you randomly lose huge chunks of behavior when the week changes. I'm talking about losing almost 25% behavior at once. Seems a bit much when it doesn't even happen when you get new students.

So maybe bump up the amount of money you get at start and look at those sudden behavior tankings.

Another point would be the slow increase of reputation. Maybe add a yearly/biyearly event that rewards reputation/money if academics/arts/athletics are high enough.

Really glad someone's working on this! As I said in an old discussion of the original game, there seemed to be something of a rich get richer phenomenon (not uncommon with these sorts of games) which I saw as a problem; if corruption is low and inhibition is high, it is very difficult to increase corruption, while once corruption gets up a bit or inhibition gets a little lower, it suddenly becomes almost trivial to push it to the limit. I feel like it should be the other way around, that the more extreme the school gets, the harder it is to push things further. The worst offender is the cases where choosing the too sexy option in a conversation produces a backlash and actually makes the target less corrupt or more inhibited; that should never happen. Choosing the too sexy option should always make the target more corrupt/less inhibited; if they aren't ready for it, they should also become angry and unhappy, and maybe in some cases it should damage the school's reputation, but things like that should be the only negative effects. And for the other side of the problem, where it gets too easy to corrupt later in the game, once corruption gets high/inhibition gets low, obviously mildly sexy options should stop creating any further increase in corruption or decrease in inhibition.

I tried to reduce the rich get richer effect, but to some extend its unavoidable - good stats do have to have positive effects after all. Otherwise, they aren't good stats.  ;)
I have already implemented a limiter system, so milder actions won't corrupt further if your school already is fairly corrupt.  ::)
I also did my best to limit backlash effects where people get more inhibited by you being too forward. But in some cases it just seemed to be the correct response, so there is some of it.
I personally like that stealth aspect of the game: It all seems perfectly innocent, until you start breaching that innocents and corrupting people. And suddenly a lot more options become viable.

As an example of an event whose rewards I modified:
Code: [Select]
label school_grounds17:
    "As you walk out of school you see a girl just as a wind gust blows up her skirt."
    menu:
        "Look!":
            if inhibition > 80:
                "You catch a hint of her panties while the girl pushes down her skirt and screams pervert at you."
                $ reputation_o.dec(0.1)
                $ morale_o.dec(0.5)
                $ deviance_o.inc(0.2)
            elif deviance >= 20:
                "You catch a hint of her panties while the girl smiles and ask if you like what you see."
                $ inhibition_o.dec(0.3,40)
                $ deviance_o.inc(0.3,50)
            else:
                "You catch a hint of her panties as the girl unsurely pushes down her skirt again."
                $ morale_o.dec(0.2)
                $ inhibition_o.dec(0.3,60)
                $ deviance_o.inc(0.1,20)
        "Look away":
            "You quickly look away."
    return
So in no case does being too forward make the students more inhibited or less deviant. And there are limits to how uninhibited and deviant this event can make them:
inhibition can't drop below 40, deviance can't raise above 50.
(This is the event as it will be in 0.2, not in the currently published version)

If you compare my version with the original, I think you will find that I am putting way more emphasis on limiting the speed of that corruption and giving you new things to worry about (student stress being the most prominent example). Yes, new options should open up by the corruption, but it should not be all smooth sailing. I want to keep the player engaged by having new problems for him to juggle.  ;D
Will surely get expanded as the game matures.  :)

In version 0.2 you will get another way to make money early on. It won't be fast either, and I don't want to give you a money making machine early on, but it should cut down the grind a little bit.

Another point i noticed in late-game. At some point, roughly around the time you've unlocked everything except the "minimum inhibition 0", You're morale and behavior starts plummeting at such speeds that you cant effectively stop it.

Thanks! I will keep a look out for it. But I can only playtest it so much. So it's possible I will need a more precise bug report to get it fixed if I don't randomly reproduce it.

Another point would be the slow increase of reputation. Maybe add a yearly/biyearly event that rewards reputation/money if academics/arts/athletics are high enough.
Nah, I like the slow increase in population, as that is what drives the money curve. I want to keep a languid pace to the game. Quickly raising your reputation would destroy that.

Your bug report is actually what motivated me to implement the weekly stat changes screen, which in turn turned up a very obscure bug in weekly stat effects.
I don't think that is the problem you had, but if you or anybody has weekly stat effects which seem really weird - in 0.2.0 there is now a good way to get more information about what is going on.  8)

In playtesting the new version, I almost maxed out all of the stats (about 15 months in game time), and everything has seemed to be pretty stable.

Okay, I've been playing the latest version and I think I have no idea whats going on with stats anymore.

I played until April 3 - 2nd year and just could not make any real headway. I started off by choosing the careful personality and leaving the policys on the defaults, then bought the pool and the cheerleader club. I played for a while, and let my normal school stats build, and I found that morale really took off (hitting 90-100 by sometime after the first year had passed) and Athletics rose steadly but slowly. I eventually switched the school uniform and depiction of the human body to normal and tried to work on getting athletics and academics up above 50. I also noticed that Behaviour would drop a bit but usually gain enough during the week to stay steady. I also saw stress starting to rise. After about a year I had enough money to buy the cafeteria.

I decided at this point to try lowering inhibition and raising deviance. So I switched the school uniform to No Uniform, but this caused my behaviour to plummet by 3 points a week and choosing Behaviour focus for the week didn't seem to help. So I unlocked spanking but this only slowed the loss to 2.5 a week and I think started to cause stress to climb even more. And since Inhibition didn't seem to be dropping I swapped back to Normal Uniform while trying to build a Behaviour buffer and unlock Hyper-sexualized models and the bathhouse. Once I had both of those I let them run for a bit but still couldn't lower my inhibition more than a point or two, which was wiped out at the end of the week. So I set the Uniform to None again and tried visiting the bath a lot and picking the option to let people get away with PDA's when they came up. And once again all this did was cause my Behaviour (and occasionally Rep) to fall without decreasing Inhibition and raising Deviance by enough to escape any gains being swept away at the end of the week. And by this point my stress was up to 7.6.

Any hints as to what I'm doing wrong? Also, is the Rules menu actually used for anything? It's always empty when I check and I'm not sure what the difference between a Rule and a Policy would be anyway.

Ok, I'll try to explain it some, but it's complex, and I only have your description of what you are doing, so...

For rules: Go into "Unlocks", and unlock "PDAs are allowed". With good behavior, this will be cheap (down to 10 stuff support).
Now you can enable the rule "PDAs are allowed" under "Rules".
This is actually one of the most all around beneficial rules/policies you can enact. Amongst other things, it actually directly lowers stress if your students are uninhibited or deviant. :-)
As for differences between rules and policies: rules are on/off switches, while policies have different options.

Please remember that stress will temporarily go up when you change the dresscode, because the students have to get used to the new policy. This will drop back down again with time (a few weeks).
You can see this in the line "Stress change: +1 (0)" when looking at a policy option.
The +1 is the immediate stress change, while (0) is the stress change once the temporary effect is gone again.
In other words: Constantly changing the dresscode to try to lower stress is counter productive...

Stress rises with policy changes (as just described), higher academic achievements and athletics.
It goes down with higher morale and behavior, and better buildings.

So your problem is probably that your academics and athletics stats continued to rise, and you did not do enough to counteract that.
To a certain point this is self correcting: Academics and athletics go down if stress is high (though morale does too), which lowers stress.
You need good enough mitigation to be able to max out your stats and keep stress in check.  :)

Maybe also take a look at other policies? Dresscode is not the only one influencing morale and behavior (and thus stress) by a long shot. Things like learning materials, class size, teacher leeway.
Most things are tradeoffs, and there is no way around thinking, experimenting, and observing to figure out what works.  :)

One way to get more feedback is to enable the option "More Numbers" in the preferences. That will give you a new Option "Stat Changes" in the main menu. Its not that easy to interpret (which is why it is hidden), but it is pretty handy when trying to figure out which policy influences which stat.

Hope that helped a bit. Maybe others want to chime in with more concrete game play tips?  ;)

EDIT: one last thing, stress is ok as long as you can offset the stat loss from it. In my own save game, I am at 7.1 stress, yet my stats are getting close to being maxed all around.  8)

Hey, I've got a suggestion.  Something that neither the original nor this version has is the students graduating.  I mean, it's a school, so they're supposed to stay for maybe a couple of years and then enter the world at large, right?  So graduation is a big missed opportunity here.

It could even become steadily more depraved as the school does.  Starting normal, and eventually ending with the MC personally impregnating every female graduate or something.

Good idea.
My version actually has graduation of students once a year.
But currently it is only a number crunching thing. Eventually having an event with pictures for it would definitely be nice!   :D

The next update will happen once I have something worth sharing.
I can't tell you even an approximate date, sorry.
It will break save compatibility (I just reworked how stats get saved).

What would very much motivate me, if anybody wants to help, is concrete event suggestions (as in, a proposed event text, and a link to a picture  :) ), or modding the game in any way (and sharing the result  ;) ).
Remember, while AAR is backwards compatible with Ashford Academy classic mods, you can do quite a bit more in AAR (the distribution contains an example mod in game/images/example).

Anyway, I am working on it (again), so an update will happen at some point.  :)

PS: even the suggestion of turning student graduation into an event could be achieved by a mod.
All the mod would need to do, is call "hook_yearly_planning.add()" in its main.rpy, and then define a label <modname>_yearly_planning, just like the example mod does for the day_start hook.
(And if anybody does something like this, I'll gladly adapt it into the main program, if you give me leave for it. :D )

So really, you can already do an awful lot within the currently released framework.  8)

Hey, I can't really work Ren'py well, but I've got a couple ideas that I thought might be interesting.

1. separated dresscode or entrance requirements for girls and boys.  It was kinda inferred/stated in the original AA that the dresscode just wasn't really enforced for boys on campus, which I appreciate, but I think that making both dresscode and entrance requirements different for whether students are male or female could open up some interesting-and hot-avenues.

2.some mid-to-high corruption/lust clubs to be unlocked.  Like a prostitution club, or a cow club.

3.having a 'personal assistant' chosen every day/week/month from the students to be the MC's lackey/live-in sex slave for a bit.  There's no reason why our MC should be going to bed every night alone-I mean, outside of gameplay considerations, and I don't know how this would work, but thought it'd be fun.  Plus, it'd let us get a more personal view of how our students see Ashford Academy.

4.Birth control policies[mid-corrupted school].  It can start out as a way to keep the student mother population low, before becoming a way to keep it high later if something like 'fertility drugs in every meal' is chosen or something.

5.Lewd bullying?  Some people are into being bullied, so even at high Discipline and Happiness, it'd crop up later in High-Lust.

6.Girls offering to just stay at the Academy forever.  I'm sure that there'd be more than a few by the end-game that'd prefer to just keep their current high-sex lifestyle going.

7.news of how your students are doing post-graduation.  Can range from, 'I became a sushi chef' to 'It was tough considering I haven't owned clothes since Freshman Year but I'm happy' to letters from parents letting the MC know that they're definitely sending their other children to AA.
